Editor's review
This is a tool that helps play media files so that transcription can be carried out.
This is a media player essentially, but with controls that are useful for transcription work. This utility is capable of playing a large number of media formats. These include video files (MPEG, WMV, FLV, etc.) with visuals displayed. The tool adds time stamps so that the transcribed notes can be synchronized with the media. This can play files locally or on a remote server. Depending on the transcription workflow adopted, the files to be transcribed may be downloaded to the local drive of a transcriber, or the transcriber can point the media player to the file in a central location. Because of the nature of the work the transcriber may need to go back and forth over sections of the visual to clearly understand what is happening in the scene. It is useful, if these controls can be managed through foot pedal switches keeping the hands free to type out the words.
Keyboard shortcuts will help doing things faster when pedal switches may not be available. The sound quality is good. This is kind of essential as the main job is to write up the sounds/spoken words into a transcribed file. You can use hotkeys for common transcription phrase. These could be things like “overtalking" or "unclear", saving you time. The interface is simple and the main part is the visual area that displays the file. Some useful features are auto-backspace, balance, speed adjuster, etc. The biggest feature, of course is that it is free. This is a very good tool.
